PETER GARDNER’S ‘VERDICT’ FROM THE MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS 24TH AUGUST 1972
This is a sad day for Malcolm Allison who had demanded points, pep and performance from Manchester City at Derby. And he so nearly had his wish except for that nightmare slip by Corrigan in the middle of a brilliant evening’s goalkeeping. City showed they are definitely on their way back with a great first half and very professional second.
Bell and Doyle had their names taken quite unnecessarily, one for talking and the other for dallying, but Mellor showed high promise: only inexperience robbed him of goals. Mike Summerbee unaccountably missed a chance to save the evening for City, but his shot was sliced wide.
