PETER GARDNER’S ‘VERDICT’ IN THE MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS FOOTBALL PINK FINAL 28TH APRIL 1973
Crystal Palace may be relegated, but they are still prepared to fight for their pride and their manager, as they showed against Manchester City at Maine Road today.
Malcolm Allison, the new Palace boss who left Maine Road only a month ago, probably felt he had a point to make against his old club.
His team made it for him when they not only equalised a Francis Lee penalty but four minutes later took the lead, both goals coming from Don Rogers.
City had only themselves to blame. In the opening stages of the game, Lee scored a fine penalty after only 3 minutes, they had set a cracking and looked likely to extend their unbeaten run under Johnny Hart.
But they seemed to lose interest as the game wore on, allowing Palace more time and more freedom to express themselves.
In fact, City were lucky with their equalising penalty, the third of the game, for it was a harsh decision by the referee.
John Craven’s goal two minutes from time must have been a sweet one for Allison.
I was there. This was my first game at Maine Road. I’ll never ever forget.
