…The Palace defence was rarely troubled by a slow moving attack whose first shot did not come for an hour despite having territorial advantage.
City held the upper hand for the first half hour then a Palace attack led to their first goal when Cliff Holton made the opening for Bobby Kellard to cross and Keith Smith hammered the ball home past Dowd. Having also had a good looking header disallowed for offside, nine minutes into the second half Keith Smith was not to be denied again as he snapped up a cross-field ball from Peter Burridge and was forced almost to the bye-line before whipping in a shot that flew past Dowd and entered the net via the crossbar and a post.
