REPORT FROM IRELAND’S SATURDAY NIGHT 6TH SEPTEMBER 1986
Manchester City, careless in defence and lethargic in attack, were punished by a spirited Coventry City side in the 37th minute when Cyrille Regis, the former England and West Brom striker, put the visitors ahead with a well taken goal.
Hard working Dave Bennett, a former Maine Road player, began the goal-producing move in midfield finding full back Brian Burrows whose incisive pass to Regis was swiftly rammed home.
Robert Hopkins, Manchester City’s recent £132,000 signing from Birmingham was desperately anxious to impress and figured in a neat move that might have brought the equaliser but Davies placed his final header wide.
Two minutes from time, Regis should have settled the issue conclusively but pulled his shot wide when clean through to end a match that only the few Coventry supporters in the crowd of 18,320 can have enjoyed.
