FROM THE MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS FOOTBALL PINK FINAL 15th April 1972 ‘VERDICT ON CITY’ BY PETER GARDNER
Tony Towers, the man who came back to City’s League Championship battle last week, shot the Blues ahead at Coventry, where both sides had to contend with difficult conditions.
His 52nd minute effort was a great psychological boost for City who had found Coventry resourceful.
With Mike Summerbee agan having a magnificent match the Blues were able to counter repeated Coventry attacks which increased in intensity once they had gone behind.
The outcome was a fine second half, with both sides committing themselves to all-out attack. The City frontrunners were forced to battle bravely in the face of rugged Coventry resistance, but both Wyn Davies and Francis Lee were always prepared to have a go.
There was just as much resistance in the City back four, and although a lot of the action was centred in midfield it was still a gripping encounter.
In the 81st minute, however, City’s title chances took a severe knock when Dennis Mortimer drove in an equaliser for Coventry.
