Coventry came under some heavy pressure early on from Manchster City at Highfield Rod and it was mainly due to some hard work by Setters that the visitors did not get In many telling shots: at this stage.
Then came a blow for the Sky Blues when Machin was hurt and limped off the field. Coventry struggled with 10 men for four minutes until Coop, the substitute, was sent on.
In the 27th minute Manchester City went ahead with a gift of a goal. A Lee centre bounced awkwardly, hit Bruck and bounced into the Coventry net from close in.
In the 54th minute Hateley scored his first goal for Coventry through a dogged challenge against three Manchester defenders.
At first he seemed to have lost the battle but he stuck to his task and as he collapsed in a heap with Booth, he stuck out his right leg and steered the ball wide of Dowd
