Manchester City paid dearly for a penalty miss by the prolific Jim Tolmie at Carlisle, where Nicky Reid was sent off after 78 minutes.
Tolmie, the Scot who has been such a key figure in the Blues’ bid to bounce back into the top flight saw his 23rd minute spot kick saved.
Then Carlisle stepped in to take a 2-0 lead through Alan Shoulder and Malcolm Posket.
To complete a miserable day for City, Reid was sent off for a foul on Coughlin. It was his third booking of the season and that could cause a further suspension.
