DEFENCE SALVAGES A POINT FOR CITY
A REPORT FROM THE GUARDIAN 25TH SEPTEMBER 1974
Manchester City wanted two points from this match against the First Division newcomers, but in the end they were more than happy to settle for a draw against Carlisle United, who worried City in midfield, where it hurts most.
From there Carlisle went on to build up some impressive attacks. But their forwards, who have scored only twice at home this season, failed again and little got through to the City goalkeeper, MacRae. In the opening minutes he was called on twice to punch good crosses clear, but, all-in-all, he had a reasonably quiet evening.
The danger of this lack by Carlisle was well illustrated by Colin Bell. After 40 minutes he stole in to send a flying header towards Carlisle’s far post. Fortunately for the home side, Alan Ross was there to pull off a great save.
In the last four minutes Bell Bell had a chance to score. Hartford put over a centre which Bell touched on to the outside of the post, with Ross already beaten. It would have beam a shame indeed if Carlisle had fallen to this sort of chance.
In the second half Carlisle’s left back, Gorman made some wonderful overlaps down the left and Mike Summerbee found himself marking Gorman instead of the reverse. In the 59th minute Doyle was carried off with a leg injury and was replaced by Henson.
… The man of the match for City was Hartford, if only for his sheer determination and skill in the middle…
