MIKE SUMMERBEE GRABS BOTH POINTS FOR CITY

Bury were struggling to get away from the Second Division relegation zone. City were still at the top of the table.
…The home defence looked somewhat apprehensive when dealing with a lively Bury forward line, and there were situations when the City fans were ill-at-ease as well!
Former Blue Paul Aimson – recently transferred to Bury – missed a great opportunity to equalise after 33 minutes when he blazed the ball over Harry Dowd’s crossbar, then former Sunderland and Darlington player Jack Maltby hit a post just after the interval.
Colin Bell was played at centre forward by City manager Joe Mercer but looked distinctly unhappy in the role, while Ralph Brand replaced the flu-stricken Neil Young out on the left.
It was Brand who was the architect behind the only goal of the match. He wandered across the field, popped up in the outside right position, and from there put in a low centre which was met by the forehead of Mike Summerbee after he had sunk to his knees in readiness for the chance.
The game finished on a controversial note when it semed that Glyn Pardoe had handled the ball in clearing a shot from Aimson off the line. The referee thought otherwise, which upset the Bury manager, Bert Head; after all, every point was precious to Bury in their position. Happily, they avoided the drop anyway.
