What other side but Manchester City could miss a penalty, have a goal disallowed, see the opposing goalkeeper make at least three superb saves, play for 45 minutes without a centre forward, and still win 7-0.
City did all these with the arrogant ease of a team that could well be gearing itself up for the FA Cup.
Burnley’s immature looking babes, who earlier this season set the First Division on fire with a string of six successive victories, were brushed aside so authoritatively that one might have felt sorry for them had they gone down honourably instead of hacking and kicking at so superior opponents.
The result was that Burnley lost face… as City ran up their highest League score for five years.

    • First game I ever went to, in my memory for ever. But I’m now an ardent United fan.
And my first game at Old Trafford was against Burnley later that season.

      • How could you? Also my first game . A boy of eight years old.
Never forget it. Just came to mind watching the Burnley game tonight v Liuton.
I was in the platt lane with my Dad.
Funny how a few of us commenting on here saw City for the first time for this game.

  1. First game I attended , 9 years old , we played football in the morning for 1st Middleton Cubs then after the game the cub leader surprised us all and said we are taking you all to watch City , what a game to start with , do I remember it correctly , we got a penalty which Franny was going to take and as he turned for his run Tony Coleman ran in and blasted it over the bar !! Happy days !

  2. This was also my first match at Maine Road. Went there as a Red (as all my family were from Newton Heath) but I left as a blue! What a game. Supported City ever since.
