FROM AN ARTICLE BY JOHN MADDOCKS, PUBLISHED IN THE CITY PROGRAMME 11TH MARCH 1989
Joe Corrigan had a blinder! Unfortunately he was playing for Brighton against City at the Goldstone Ground on March 10th, and performed heroics for 77 minutes following an accidental kick on his left arm by Paul Power early on.
Brighton had a debutant in Willie Young, who was given a hot time by the City forwards, although they were far too charitable on the day, Kinsey (twice), Power, Baker and Dalziel all scorning splendid opportimities which would have revived the Blues’ promotion challenge had they been taken.
Not that City played badly. There was a look of honest endeavour about the team which saw them produce sweeping moves up the field. But they were without Parlane and Tolmie, and Kevin Bond never looked comfortable up front. The first half was goalless and it wasn’t until 10 minutes after the break that Asa Hartford managed to beat Corrigan, his shot from all of 25 yards zipping into the bottom comer.
Penney had replaced the concussed Connor in the home team during the first half, and it was he who fed the ball to Tony Grealish
10 minutes after Hartford’s goal. Grealish cleverly chipped over Williams from the edge of the box.
McCarthy was a tower of strength in the City side, but Alan Young got past him late on to power in a volley, Williams making an excellent save to preserve a point for the Blues.
While manager Billy McNeill was disappointed with the result and his players’ frittering away of chances, he expressed satisfaction after the game with the way the team had played.
