Manchester City were beaten 2-1 by West Germany’s Borussia Dortmund here today in a lacklustre match which had both teams showing signs of end-of-season staleness.
A strict Italian referee made his mark on the game by giving 22 free kicks against the German club winners of the 1965/66 European Cup Winners Cup, and also disallowed two goals by City.
Francis Lee and Tony Book each got the ball into the net only for the referee rule that the scores should not count because of robust tackles made during the approach movement.
Goalkeeper Ken Mulhearn earned a special ovation from the 9,000 crowd for a series of fine saves during dome strong attacks by the German’s for whom international forward Sigi Held was the most dangerous raider.
City took half an hour to settle down and fire in their first dangerous shot.
Borussia Dortmund went ahead after only two minutes through inside right Willie Neuberger. Centre Forward Chris Jones replied for City in the 33rd minute whe he hit home a rebound from the crossbar.
Outside left Wosab scored the winning goal in the 82nd minute,
