FROM AN ARTICLE BY JOHN MADDOCKS PUBLISHED IN THE CITY PROGRAMME 18TH NOVEMBER 1979
… The Blues dumped neighbours Bolton Wanderers into the First Division bottom spot with a 1-0 win at Burnden. It was a game that had Bolton fans howling for the dismissal of manager Ian Greaves, although he professed that the sharpening of the terrace knives didn’t frighten him.
lf honest, the fans from the other end of the A666(M) could sympathise with Greaves; his team had outplayed City for long periods of the game except where it mattered—in front of goal. Whatmore, Gowling and Roy Greaves should all have done better in that area. Willie Morgan and a young Neil McNab both worked hard to set up Wanderers’ chances that were either scorned by colleagues or brilliantly stopped by Corrigan.
The game was settled on the half-hour. Bennett crossed hard and low, Deyna dummied only for Robinson to miss the ball. Power swooped in to knock the ball back into the middle, Walsh cleared it to Bennett, and he fed Daley who scored his first goal for City in 9 weeks’ action.
