This was the only City game I ever attended and I would have been 13 at the time. We used to live in Kersal but then moved to Crewe in ’55. My older brother was still living in Manchester (working for Granada TV) and was a big City fan. He took me to this game. Clive Colbridge had played for Crewe Alexandra before moving to City. All I can remember clearly about this game is that Colbridge took the legs from under Matthews from behind. An immediate red card for a long time now. It was a free kick back then but I can’t recall if Colbridge was even spoken to back then. Very different times!
