FROM THE ARTICLE ‘FLASHBACK’ BY JOHN MADDOCKS, PUBLISHED IN THE CITY PROGRAMME 24TH OCTOBER 1987
When Bamsley came to Maine Road for the opening home game of the 1983/84 campaign, it was the first League game here between the two sides since April1951, a Second Division fxture which we had won 6-0, and another stepping stone to promotion that season.
Presumably as a punishment for being relegated, the League computer had decreed that the first two games of the ’83/84 season should be away. The Blues travelled to London and beat Crystal Palace 2-0, then on Bank Holiday Monday trekked to Cardiff, suffering a 1-2 reverse. The highlights of these games were the form shown by Billy McNeill’s new signings: the Scottish trio of Neil McNab (from Brighton), Jim Tolrnie (from Belgian club Lokeren), and Derek Parlane, signed on a free transfer after being released by Leeds United.

Parlane scored on his City debut, Andy May grabbing the other goal, and Tolmie laid on both. It was his turn to get on the scoresheet at Cardiff, so clearly non-travelling City fans wanted to see for themselves just how good these two were. The Oakwell
side had only played one League game prior to their visit here, a satisfying trouncing of Fulham by 3-0, so the stage was set for an interesting encounter.
And so it proved. Both teams provided an exciting, exhilarating performance on the day, and it was interesting to watch Barnsley’s Mick McCarthy… who provided the opportunity for our first goal after 23 minutes. He unlawfully felled Graham Baker 25 yards out, Tolrnie took the free-kick, and it curved past a bemused Bobby Horn in the visitors’ goal.

City totally dominated the first half-hour, but had only the one goal to show for it. Skipper McCarthy rallied his defence well, and the visitors snatched an equaliser after 39 minutes when a fine flowing move resulted in Winston Campbell putting the ball into the path of full-back Phil Chambers, who netted low into the comer. But Bamsley were still celebrating when Baker fed Tolmie, the Scot racing in from the left to restore our lead with a powerful left-foot shot.
After the break Bamsley resumed in a determined fashion and equalised again on the hour. David Wilkes sent over a perfect cross for Stuart Gray to head wide of Alex Williams. The Blues bounced back yet again and clinched the game with a splendid goal from
Parlane. The other newcomer, McNab, found him loitering in the penalty area, and Derek showed fine control by killing the pace of the ball with his left foot and hitting it home with his right…

My very first Man City game. I will never forget reaching the top of the stairs of the Kippax and seeing the beautiful green pitch.
