Manchester City could be forced to start next season without star striker Dennis Tueart who was sent off in a fiery finale to the Blues American tour yesterday.
The flashpoint incident which led to Tueart’s dismissal came in City’s final match of the Transatlantic Challenge Cup tournament against Roma in New York, which the Blues won 3-2 with goals from Steve Daley, Paul Sugrue and Kaziu Deyna.
A game marred by five bookings and 56 fouls erupted in a three minute punch-up after Tueart had dived into a ruck of Roma players surrounding Dragoslav Stepanovic.
Tueart appeared to punch Roma’s Turone on the nose and was promptly flattened by a right hand hook from Spinosi.
The enraged Tueart jumped to his feet and chased Spinosi off the pitch to roars of approval from the 50,000 crowd. When they returned they were both shown the red card by referee Dante.
But that momentary loss of control seems certain to land Tueart in disciplinary hot-water with the English Football Association with the outcome being a suspension to coincide with the start of next season.
“We will now have to wait to see what the referee says about Dennis’s sending off in his report,” said City secretary Bernard Halford.
“A copy of that report will also be sent to our FA and it will be up to them to see what action to take, if any.
“But if they do decide to suspend Dennis it is virtually certain that the ban will start at the beginning of next season.” …
