TONY TOWERS CLINCHES THE TIE FOR CITY
…at maine Road they kicked us four times harder than they had done in Portugal and it was the first time I had ever come across a massed defensive system which had all eleven men back. They were cynical and so blatant were there defensive tactics, it seemed all the more ridiculous that only three weeks earlier people had been dismissing them as a bunch of students whose main interest was in sitting for their degrees. They all had degrees, all right, in how to mix it out on the pitch.
It looked like being a frustrating night for us because something like 80 minutes had gone by and there were still no goals. Then Tony Towers struck. The ball bobbled off one of their defenders and Tony hit it first time. It was scrappy but it did the trick and it seemed the only we could have got a goal, the way the tie had been panning out. We won 1-0 and went through to the semi-finals FROM BLUE BLOOD THE MIKE DOYLE STORY
