FROM AN ARTICLE BY JOHN MADDOCKS PUBLISHED IN THE CITY PROGRAMME 10TH DECEMBER 1988
AC Milan came here for the second leg of the UEFA Cup tie and were devastated by 3 goals before the break. City had the best players on the field in Barnes and Hartford and the Italians were totally demoralised.
In predictable Latin style, the visitors conceded a string of free-kicks but City kept their heads and took advantage, despite the intimidation.
Following a foul on Channon, it was Tommy Booth who opened the scoring for City, heading past Albertosi on the quarter hour. Corrigan made a good save from Baresi and the second goal arrived after 32 minutes. It was a rare Hartford special; set up by
Viljoen, his right-foot shot curled into the top comer.
Ten minutes before the interval Kidd glanced home a beauty, again from a Hartford free-kick. The Blues eased off after the break although Kidd and Channon both hit the woodwork and City went through 5-2 on aggregate.
