… It was late in the season before Deyna scored his first City goal, and the next home game was the one where the fans would see Kazi Deyna at his best. Birmingham City were the visitors in a match which marked the debut of youngster Steve Lynex for the visitors.
Along with Chelsea, the Midlanders had already been relegated while we were in 16th spot. Birmingham’s manager in those days was Jim Smith and the club was so plagued by injuries that he had tried to get the match postponed.
A quarter of an hour had elapsed when our Blues took the lead. Colin Bell sent a long ball down the right wing, and after a Birmingham mix-up, Mike Channon found Paul Power, who had the easiest of tasks to score.
Birmingham equalised after 37 minutes. Bell gave away a free kick on the left, Stewart Barrowclough centred, and in came the debut boy, Lynex, to beat Willie Donachie and Joe Corrigan to head into the net.
The game seemed to be heading for a draw until Deyna took centre stage. With 14 minutes left, Channon was again the provider, and his intelligent cross looped into the area where the Pole sank to his knees and carefully guided the ball home from his forehead.
Three minutes from the end the applause was for Kazi again. Once more Channon was the man with the key to unlock the defence. He split them open with a lovely through pass and Deyna made ground to calmly score our third…
