Manchester City beat Manchester United 3-0 last night at Old Trafford, a result which was insignificant compared with the fact that in atrocious weather 26,161 spectators turned out to pay their practical respects to the admirable Bill Foulkes.
This was a testimonial match with a difference. On an occasion such as this, the trend is for a confrontation between two sides packed with internationals from all over the place, and with a few more wanting to go on as substitutes. But no dedicated City nor United player could ask for anything better than a testimonial game against his neighbours; and Foulkes should be agreeably surprised when the final financial statement is produced for his delight. Goals might be harder to come by for City at the moment but there was one scored a few days ago which had something special about it. lt was in Bill Foulkes Testimonial game at Old Trafford, and it came from the penalty spot. The scorer, Mike Doyle, and we need say no more about the delight he got in scoring it.
“Francis was due to take the penalties of course” says Mike. “But he knew it was an ambition of mine to score at both ends of Old Trafford. l scored last season at the Stretford End, and now I’ve cracked it at the other end.
How was the dirty deed done? “l’d describe it as one that went in like a steam train, low to the goalkeeper’s right. Had him going the wrong way, . . . of course.”
