The Blues’ “Will they, won’t they?” promotion season stuttered on, their task made no easier by losing at home to Charlton Athletic on 31st March. It was a game of missed chances as far as City were concemed, the earliest coming after 7 minutes when Parlane and Power combined well to set up Tolmie, who fluffed his chance completely. ‘
As though squandered opportunities weren’t bad enough, the struggling Blues had Johns to face in the Charlton goal who was in sparkling form.
The lowest League gate of the season to date, 19,147, was growing increasingly restless, and became positively liverish after 58 minutes when a free-kick came across, the City defence all took a fancy to Flanagan, and unmarked ex-Blue Chris Jones blasted the winner past Williams.
