DAVID JOHNSON SCORES A DEBUT GOAL
FROM AN ARTICLE BY JOHN MADDOCKS, PUBLISHED IN THE CITY PROGRAMME 18TH MARCH 1989
Matters improved somewhat the following Saturday, Cardiff City being beaten 2-1 at Maine Road. There were two new faces in the Blues ranks: the much-travelled David Johnson from Everton, and Gordon Smith from Brighton, both players having signed three days earlier.
The visitors took a 17th minute lead through leading scorer Owen and from then on concentrated on deterrninedly booting the ball anywhere to preserve their lead.
In the 82nd minute an equaliser arrived, Power’s corner finding McCarthy who in tum fed Johnson and the new boy scored an acrobatic debut goal.
Then it was the late, late show again! With 30 seconds left Dibble was beaten by a powerful Baker drive from 20 yards and City had grabbed three points when a defeat had looked more likely.
