…In front of a 41,767 crowd, Arthur Cox’s Magpies went straight for the City jugular. And after just 21 minutes it was 2-0 to United. In 19 minutes Chris Waddle teed a ball up to Keegan and he cushioned a header into the path of Peter Beardsley. Beardo still had a lot to do, but in typical fashion he left defenders Mick McCarthy and Kevin Bond floundering and lifted a powerful shot high past Alex Williams into the City net. The thousands of travelling fans had barely stopped celebrating when, two minutes later, Terry McDermott threaded a fine ball into Keegan’s path and keeper Alex Williams was soundly beaten by the shot. “Peter’s goal would be better than mine because Peter’s goals always were,” smiles Kevin, who has never hidden his admiration for the quality of the lad from Longbenton who hit the top of the football tree. Two-nil was too much for City to pull back, although Steve Kinsey grabbed a goal early in the second half which ensured a tense finish. adapted from article in Newcastle away programme 2nd January 2008
