FROM AN ARTICLE BY JOHN MADDOCKS, PUBLISHED IN THE CITY PROGRAMME 21ST JANUARY 1989
It was an unchanged Cfity team that took the field at Blackburn…, fresh from their victory over Crystal Palace the previous week.
Referee Michael Peck passed the frozen pitch fit at 10.00 a.m. but it was a decision that angered manager Billy McNeill. Naturally, as Rovers emerged eventual 2-1 winners, their manager Bobby Saxton disagreed with him.
Blackbum got off to a rip-roaring start with Irish international Noel Brotherston putting them ahead after 4 minutes. He moved swiftly up the right wing, amazingly without being seriously challenged, and cracked home a shot from 18 yards.
City fought back but Williams was put under pressure by the Rovers’ attack and Garner in particular. The City ‘keeper dealt well with the shots that came his way, then Baker and Parlane set up Kinsey who hit the bar.
The equaliser arrived 5 minutes before the break. Fazackerly lost the ball to Baker who fed Power, but as the City skipper’s cross came over, Lowey sent Tolrnie flying, and the little Scot tucked away the penalty.
Williams and Gennoe looked like keeping clean sheets in the second half, performing excellently as both teams committed themselves to attack in search of the winner. But after 69 minutes it was Rovers’ turn to be awarded a penalty, a controversial decision, Power being adjudged to have pushed Garner.
Fazackerley beat Williams with the spot-kick, much to Rovers’ relief as they had missed FIVE similar awards during the season!
