FROM AN ARTICLE BY JOHN MADDOCKS, PUBLISHED IN THE CITY PROGRAMME 26TH NOVEMBER 1988
City’s drive along the road to promotion hit a few pot-holes in the form of suspensions (Baker) and injuries (Hartford, Reid, Kinsey and Davidson).
Derby County were the visitors to Maine Road and in came Jamie Hoyland for his first League game, having scored as sub. against Torquay a month earlier in the Milk Cup. Kevin Bond replaced Reid who was also about to start a suspension.
It was the nearest City had come to losing their unbeaten home League record as Derby turned on the heat and played far better than their League position suggested. Parlane gave us the lead in the 9th minute with a fierce volley from a Power header, but Derby came back strongly and equalised through Plummer. Veteran Archie Gemmill played a blinder, setting up attacks by Davison and Kevin Wilson which hardly gave Bond and Caton time to draw breath. They say luck favours the brave, and City were fortunate when Davison sliced several yards wide with Alex Williams on the floor.
