MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS 13TH MAY 1970
Manchester City came good against South Australia here today, with a convincing 4-0 win following the disappointing draw against WA in Perth.
Manager Joe Mercer was in the mood for messing about today. He instructed his players to go out and score goals to prove to Australian soccer fans that City were here on business as well as pleasure.
Even so, it took the tourists a long time to take control against South Australia’s semi-professionals.
In the first 25 minutes City did not look much better than the locals. Indeed if any side deserved to be ahead it was South Australia. After only two minutes home skipper Billy Birch, a Bolton exile formerly with Crystal Palace, whipped a dangerous ball across the face of City’s goal. Luckily for the Manchester men everybody missed the cross.
Tommy Booth, venturing upfield, put City a goal up in 25 minutes with a snap shot from the edge of the penalty area. Booth received the ball by courtesy of a home defender’s back pass. This passing back cost South Australia plenty in the 49th minute Terry Wetton, a replacement, slipped the ball back to his ‘keeper but Bobby Owen nipped in to score.
One minute later City were three ahead and once more they could thank the SA defence for a present. An inswingig corner by Glyn Pardoe looked safely bound for goalkeeper Romanowicz’s hands, but George Heslop’s blond head swept in to steer it home. City, completely on top now, scored the fourth through Neil Young.
