In front of a massive Maine Road crowd City went ahead against championship rivals Arsenal after 35 minutes through a goal by Peter Doherty. Although Arsenal were on top for most of the half and Frank Swift was called on several times to hold off the Gunners attack.
City gained the upper hand after the break and they secured the victory with a rare Ernie Toseland header.
