From UWE ROSLER, KNOCKING DOWN WALLS
Our fans had been amazing at Anfield and were still singing when Liverpool scored their sixth of the afternoon, so at the end of the match, having been totally outplayed from start to finish, I went over to them and threw my boots into the crowd as a gift to express my personal thanks for sticking with us when it would have been easy to go the other way. I couldn’t believe they’d been so supportive so I wanted to give them something back. I felt the boots were jinxed anyway as I’d never scored in them, but the media turned it around and suggested there was something other than goodwill in my gesture. One headline read UWE GIVES CITY FANS THE BOOT and suggested I’d had enough of the City, which was ridiculous. I made my feelings clear in the local media but it was a reminder of how even the simplest gesture could be turned on its head when things were going badly.
