Late goals by Bill Spurdle and Jack Dyson won the final league match of the season in front of a crowd of 24,684 at Fratton Park. Pompey were captained by Duggie Reid who was recalled to the side to play his last match of a grand career Jack Robertson headed Pompey into a ninth minute lead and immediately City were almost on terms but Joe Hayes’ effort came back off the inside of the post. The equaliser came on 24 minutes when Johnny Hart flashed a shot past Norman Uprichard and two minutes later Dyson but the visitors ahead.
Robertson scored his second goal of the match on the hour mark atter Peter Harris and Harry Penk had shots charged down and should have had a hat- trick minutes later but shot over from six yards.
Spurdle gave the visitors the lead on 77 minutes and two minutes later Dyson robbed Phil Gunter and went on to seal the match.
