BOBBY JOHNSTONE SCORES CITY’S 2ND GOAL
In January 1957 City were comfortably winning the third round cup replay 3-0, but a penalty early in the second half prompted a spirited fightback by Newcastle. After 86 minutes the scores were level at 3-3. City made it 4-3 in extra time but the Magpies won 5-4 despite being a player down after having lost Dick Keith in the second half of normal time. A crowd of 46,988 witnessed this amazing match.
According to City fan David Buxton this ranks as the best cup tie he ever saw, but above all else he remembers the role played by Newcastle’s Jimmy Scoularz “Strange that l should choose a game we lost as the greatest! Looking back, it was a terrific game to watch, although at the time l didn’t appreciate City throwing away a three goal lead! What still stays vividly in my mind is the leadership shown by Jimmy Scoular, a player we loved to hate. Without him, the Tynesiders would never have turned the game round, he threatened and cajoled and got the best out of his team in terrible conditions. Steam was rising from his massive thighs and balding head. Rather like our own Roy Paul, l regard Scoular as an inspirational captain. I can’t imagine either of them jumping in the air to avoid a tackle, wearing a sarong. or painting their nails pink…”

TAIT SCORES FOR NEWCASTLE FROM THE PENALTY SPOT
If this is the game I remembr , it was a Wednesday afternoon kick off and I wagged school , St Bedes College just down the road . It is the up there with one of the greatest games ever , along side Man Utd ( sorry I am Red ) against Bilbao at Maine Road the same year ? It was a privilege to see this City team play , together with the likes of Jimmy Schoular and Bobby Mitchell, they were as good , if not better as any overpaid players of to-day . I wonder if you can get the DVD of this match ? Well played Mr. Boswell
I was stationed at RAF Padgate, We went to see this on Wednesday afternoon. I came from Rotherham and been a fan of Rotherham United since the age of 8. I particularly wanted to see Lennie White playing for Newcastle, as Newcastle signed him from Rotherham after Rotherham United knocked them out of the FA Cup at Newcastle. He played on the wing. He played a blinder and scored two goals that day.
City were coasting at 3-0, until Scouler roughed them up.
