SAUNDERS NOT CONVINCING

It may be part of a manager’s job to defend his team, but Ron Saunder’s view that Manchester City had 80% of the game at Maine Road on Saturday was not so much a defence but a distortion. Ipswich Town’s first ever victory at the ground was hardly the fortunate happenstance that Saunders made out.
They deserved to win because they were superior in every department. Hunter and the 17 year old Burley were outstanding in a defence which committed only one error, and Johnson and the unlucky Whymark in particular never ceased in their efforts to try to make capital of City’s lapses at the back.
… City’s goal came as a complete surprise, when after 65 minutes Hunter and Beattie failed to move out to Doyle’s free kick and Summerbee took time out from being lectured by the referee to head his first League goal of the season. There were also misses by Tueart and a header by Bell which Sivell saved well; but Ipswich had their misfortunes too, notably when Whymark saw one header hit a post and another which was on target hit Barrett;s back.
Town however, made their own luck, taking the lead after only seven minutes with a superb volley by Johnson, restoring their advantage through Hamilton within three minutes of City’s equaliser, and confirming their superiority in the 78th minute when Morris was credited with scoring direct from a corner as Macrae fell into his own net clutching the ball which Morris swore was already over the line.
