West Brom went ahead in the tenth minute after Alec Jackson dribbled past four City defenders and set up an easy chance for Dave Burnside. Gordon Clark’s side increased their lead seven minutes later when Ronnie Allen ran in unmarked to steer home Jackson’s pass, but George Hannah pulled a goal back in the 19th minute after Law dummied Drury.
Derek Kevan raced on to Bobby Robson’s pass to blast in Albion’s third goal a minute later, then Joe Hayes headed in City’s second from Dave Wagstaffe’s corner after Ray Potter had saved brilliantly from Denis Law. West Brom’s fourth came from Kevan’s drive in the 40th minute, only for City to reply with a goal on the stroke of half-time when Law set up Colin Barlow.
Albion made it five in the 57th minute as Ronnie Allen scored with City defenders vainly appealing for offside, then Kevan had an effort adjudged offside before Allen completed his hat-trick with a powerful drive seven minutes from time.
