City started well at Upton Park and were well on top of the Hammers when Francis Lee headed in an 18th minute Mike Summerbee corner to score his 10th goal of the season.
West Ham, however. kept at it and Trevor Brooking grabbed an equaliser just before half-time, his low shot was straight at Keith Macrae, but the City custodian let the ball squirm through between his legs and into the net.
Apart from the two goals the first half was littered with nasty fouls which ended with four bookings.
After a quarter of an hour of the second period Paddon swung in a great cross into a crowded penalty area and it was the unlucky Mike Doyle who connected and nodded the ball into his own net.
City put up a strong finish but couldn’t grab the equaliser, Mervyn Day superbly tipping away a Rodney Marsh free kick and Francis Lee with a cracking strike just wide of the post with Day beaten.
