Pompey started the 1963/64 campaign with a good win over newly-relegated Manchester City in front of 21,822 fans at Maine Road.
Portsmouth went ahead after three minutes when Tony Barton’s corner was headed goalwards by Harry Harris and City’s teenage centre-half Alf Wood steered the ball into his own net After 35 minutes Pompey increased their lead when John McClelland, starring against his former club, centred and Ron Saunders sent a brilliant header flashing past Harry Dowd.
In the second-half another Saunders header thumped against the woodwork.
