The shrewd dead ball tactics which have played such a vital part in Derby County’s success in recent seasons toppled Manchester City last night and gave Brian Clough’s side their second win of the season.
The important goal came after only 20 minutes. Kevin Hector was brought down by Glyn Pardoe on the edge of the penalty area.
The Manchester wall looked secure enough as the commanding Colin Todd shaped to take the free kick. But Todd instead of shooting, ran over the ball and left Alan Hinton free to hammer in a right foot drive. Joe Corrigan touched the ball but could not prevent it from going over the line.
The City defence were clearly angry at being caught out by such a simple ruse and eventually their skipper Colin Bell was booked for arguing.
City fought resolutely in the second half and went close to salvaging a point in the closing minutes, but Derby always looked the better side…
