THE weather was right, all glorious sunshine, but the mood was wrong. Bookings for wing half Mike Doyle and midfield maestro Rodney Marsh made it an unhappy day at the seaside. Adding to the agony was a face injury for striker Denis Law following a collision of heads, forcing him to retire partly concussed at half-time; and a back injury to centre half Tommy Booth, which resulted in him being carried off in the second half. It provided Jeffrey Clarke, the teenage pivot from Pontefract, with his first taste of senior football. Joe Corrigan pulled off some superb saves in the early phase while Colin Bell made his presence felt in midfield. But the entertainment value lessened after a heated first half which reached crisis point when Blackpool’s Alan Ainscow was carried off following an incident with Marsh. match report from City programme 25th August 1973
