Matt Busby welcomed City to Stretford and congratulated the Blues on winning the Second Division. He also made a special mention of Joe in his programme notes. The two men had known each other since their playing days, Busby of course played for City and Liverpool when Joe was at Everton… in 1966 the rivalry resumed, although both men stressed that the rivalry should always be friendly, unfortunately all City’s old doubts and inadequacies returned. United were the more powerful side. At one point United’s Denis Law was at the centre of a free for all. Players squared up to each other, fists flew and the referee Jack Taylor surprised everyone by taking no action. Approximately six minutes later Denis Law upset the City players further by scoring the only goal of the game. EXTRACT FROM JOE MERCER, FOOTBALL WITH A SMILE
