It was a dour first half from both sides, not helped by a torrential downpour before the game which made the ball hard to control and maybe The Toffee Men had their minds on the upcoming FA Cup Final and City looked nervous with the prospect of securing a top four finish and maybe, just maybe another step to the league title.
The second half was a different game altogether. The news had come through that Championship rivals United, were 2-0 down at The Hawthorns and City came out all guns blazing, starting with Mike Doyle’s bullet header just two minutes after the restart which smashed against the Everton crossbar.
The Blues kept the pressure on and on the hour it was captain, Tony Book who broke the deadlock, driving the ball home from close range after a scramble in the box.
Tony Coleman sealed the victory with a shot from 20 yards which Gordon West let slip through his hands and trickle into the net.
