Both teams had many chances to take the lead in this entertaining season opener at Maine Road.
For City Colin Bell and Mike Summerbee went close with headers and The Blues had Alan Ogley to thank for going in at half-time without conceding as he saved well from England striker Roger Hunt and debutant Tony Hateley.
Neil Young almost broke the deadlock in the second half but hit the post and then Liverpool came close with an effort which was cleared off the line by Alan Oakes.
However the best chance was yet to come as City were awarded a penalty for a foul on Neil Young, it was a poor spot-kick though by Tony Book as he shot tamely wide of the post.
