Manchester’s new football season started splendidly at Maine Road last nIght when Manchester City beat. Borussia Dortmund, one of Germany’s best clubs 4-0.
In spite of having seven International players in theIr side. Dortmund were outplayed and at times out-classed in an entertaining encounter. Manchester City have thus completed a memorable close season run of three wins over European opponents following their successes on tour in May against Eintracht and Standard Liege.
The hero of the night was Doyle who scored three splendid goals but Young, Surnmerbee, and Kennedy also played well.
For Borussia. Wessel was in constant action in goal and had little chance to stop any of the goals. He had good support from Paul and Kurrat, but the only forward to impress was Libuda, although Held made a few of his famous bursts late in the game.
Manchester City started In a stylish, lively mood. They were awarded two free kicks and two corner kicks. Young and Kennedy. in particular, setting a fine pace. The first thrust by the German forwards came after fifteen minutes when Libuda after a fine drive made an exciting run on the right wing. Soon afterwards Libuda delivered another powerful shot Which was brilliantly saved by Dowd. The City goalkeeper however, saw little action for the rest of the half.
City deservedly took the lead in the 35th minute. when after some excellent play by Summerbee, Young and Coleman, Doyle hooked the ball with his left foot past Wessel.
Eight minutes later Doyle again scored. This time he headed the ball home delightfully from a well taken corner on the left from Coleman,
Doyle completed his hat-trlck 11 minutes after the interval with a magnificent header from Summerbee’s long, high corner kick. Borussia’s humiliation was completed five minutes from the end when Connor scored with a fierce shot from the edge of the penalty area.
