FRANCIS LEE SECURES CITY’S FA CUP SEMI-FINAL PLACE

tottenham home fa cup 1968 to 69 lee goal

mike doyle blue blood By the time we had got through to the quarter finals, Tottenham Hotspur were all that stood between us and a place in the semi-finals. That match still counts as the hardest of the lot. In previous encounters we had always given Spurs a good going over and they seemed to be afraid of us; but when they came to Maine Road for that cup tie their attitude was different from anything we had ever known.
Spurs came with a definite game plan and set out from the start to chase and harry us and I began to wonder if our run was going to come to a disappointing end. It looked odds on them at least taking us back to White Hart Lane for a replay, until, with something like ten minutes to go, Franny Lee turned a half chance into a goal. Pat Jennings got a hand to it, but he couldn’t stop it or us progressing into the semi-finals.
