…Allison remarked after the match: “The pitch saved Newcastle. Our ground is in much better condition, and with smooth going, I can’t see us losing.
Robson just wasn’t in the game. He never got a shot in, and gave us nothing to worry about.”
But neither Robson nor Scott can play as badly again, and Robson will be out to make Allison eat those words on Wednesday.
Yet United were lucky to live to fight again. It looked all ove as Lee zipped between twin stoppers Burton and Moncur a hit a booming drive past McFaul.
As City manager Joe Mercer said afterwards with a rueful grin: “I must admit I fancied our chances rather strongly at that moment.”
A masterpiece of understatement, but he was still wrong, for Lee’s shot cannoned off the top edge of the bar.
