QUEEN SCORES FOR PALACE TO TAKE ALL THE POINTS

…Palace were locked in a relegation battle and it appeared the club were in a downward spiral back to Division Twountil lady luck, in the shape of City, came to our aid. Four days earlier City had won the League Cup after beating West Bromwich Albion at Wembley. They paraded the trophy around the snow flecked ground prior to kick-off and were then missing some of their Wembley stars from their line-up.
Palace fans are well versed in these ingredients for a shock result and the team weathered the usual opening barrage onour goal, in which keeper John Jackson stood as firm as ever.
nine minutes from half-time they broke upfield through Roger Hoy and Jimmy Scott, who worked an opening for Gerry Queen to score from eighteen yards. As the pitch began to cut up, it hindered City’s somewhat over elaborate play, while Mel Blyth and John McCormick were commanding in the air in the Palace defence.
After the break Palace found more confidence while City visibly tired, the Wembley game had gone to extra time and was also played in heavy conditions. To the delight of the Eagles’ supporters, Palace clung to the lead with great determination to earn their first away victory in Division One.
