JOHN MADDOCKS WRITING IN THE CITY PROGRAMME 24TH FEBRUARY 1990
A real confidence booster when we returned from Molineux with a 3-1 win safely recorded. It was City’s first League win in 10 games and our second-half showing raised hopes for success in the forthcoming Wembley final against West Brom.
The first half was undistinguished then early after the break, Wolves forgot the basic rules of operating an offside trap and were twice punished in as many minutes. With defenders back-tracking frantically, a shot was beaten away only to fall to Summerbee who found the top corner. Then Lee and Oakes reduced the Wolves‘ right flank to ruins before setting Bell up for the second.
Wilson headed in for a hopeful reduction in the scoreline 3 minutes later and now our defence was tested. But we passed our exams and celebrated with another Summerbee goal; he netted over the prostrate Oldfield who had stopped a Pardoe thunderbolt with his face. Franny Lee missed a penalty. Honest!
Wolves scorer was Les Wilson
