“Tony Book pushed forward with the ball and I called for it. His pass must have been about 40 yards or so. I was moving in from the left for it, with the goalkeeper and a defender coming for it at the same time. I just got my foot to it, my right foot, to flick over the goaIkeeper’s head.
Once I saw it clear him I thought it was pretty certain to go in the net. I suppose it was about head high when I got to it. l’d been in some pain most of the game after that knock but I can’t remember feeling it during that incident.”

The Third Round of the F.A. Cup found City travelling to the East Coast where they faced a tough tie with Hull City. A splendid gate of over 30,000 enjoyed a fierce competitive game on a crisp afternoon, the home side dominating the first half without being able to score. Young had to go off for treatment to a leg injury, Hull’s Simpkin celebrating the enforced absence by hitting a post and then Chilton headed over Corrigan’s bar.
Up front the Blues were disjointed with only Summerbee looking a threat to the home defence, but after the break we began to assert ourselves. The inspiration behind the improved quality of football was Tony Book, aided and abetted by Doyle. The Hull ‘keeper, McKechnie, began to feel under pressure as we got our game together, Bowyer hitting the woodwork and Lee almost scoring with a wickedly bending free kick. inevitably, it was Book who set up the Blues’ winning goal. He split the Hull defence with a ball down the centre to Neil Young, who lobbed McKechnie as he sprinted from his line in a vain attempt to intercept.
