Alan Oakes scored a superbly timed equaliser to end Manchester City’s Elland Road goal famine this afternoon.
The Blues, who had failed to score in four successive defeats against Leeds United on their own ground, found themselves a goal down after only four minutes of a brilliant match.
Scottish international Peter Lorimer did the damage after a string of errors by the hard-pressed City defence.
But five minutes later the long-serving Oakes, who recently broke the club appearance record drove in a long shot to put his side back in the game.
Skipper Rodney Marsh almost had a second a minute later in a sensational spell. But Leeds grasped command of a fascinating duel…
And in the 57th minute Lorimer put Leeds ahead again.
… Seven minutes from the end City, whose fighting spirit never waned, were back in the game.
Donachie moved in on the right and let fly with a low shot that completely deceived the Leeds defence to finish up in the bottom corner of the net.
What superb timing for Donachie to score his first goal of the season…
