Mike Doyle was the man of the match, marshalling the defense which was also weakened by an ankle injury early in the first half to Tommy Booth, who after a long period of treatment off the field returned to the play, but clearly struggling for the rest of the match.
As far as Derby were concerned they had a few chances in the first half when they managed to overcome City’s back line, but first Joe Corrigan saved form a Hector shot and then minutes later thwarted a Durban attempt.
It was Corrigan who initially started the move to City’s sensational winning goal in the second half. A long punch out from the City custodian to break up a Derby attack, landed at Mike Summerbee’s feet on the edge of his own area, and he set off on a mazy 90 yard run in5to the Ram’s box, and then picked out a pass to Francis Lee,who made no mistake in putting the ball in the back of the net.
