Although the talking point of the game was a controversial injury time penalty awarded to City, it would have been a travesty if the match had ended in a draw.
There were stand out performances from the likes of Bell, Doyle, Lee and especially skipper Tony Book especially in the first half, and it was Franny Lee who set up Neil Young’s opening goal just after the half hour. The England forward played a perfectly weighted pass in to Young’s path, who unleashed a trademark left foot shot from 25 yards that was unstoppable.
After the break Newcastle tried to get back in the match but it was nothing more than a bit of ‘huff and puff’ until Joe Corrigan made a bad mistake to let the Geordies back in the game. Big Joe had made the save of the game in the 2nd minute from Robson, which was their only real attempt of the game, however with less than 20 minutes to go the City custodian inexplicably dropped an innocuous cross from sub Burton, straight into Robson’s path, who made no mistake with such a gift.
With the game running into injury time, Mike Doyle took it on himself to surge forward to chase a ball put into the box, and was caught by by a dual challenge from Davies and Arentoft, The referee surprisingly pointed to the penalty spot despite no appeal from Doyle.
