Ted MacDougall ‘arrived’ at West Ham on Saturday, with a goal that was almost willed upon him by the 30,000 crowd.
“It was great to see it go in,” said the £150,000 striker, after making a belated home debut. “It was my first goal in the League since just before Christmas. And I might have had a hat-trick. When you’re scoring regularly, as I was at Bournemouth, they all seem to hit the net. But I’m trying to regain my confidence after my spell with Manchester United. It will probably take a little time. The great thing is that when I run for the ball here, I get it.”
MacDougall fired West Ham ahead in the 60th minute from an inspired through ball by Trevor Brooking, the architect of this victory.
Brooking outshone Colin Bell in a midfield performance which staked his claim for full international recognition.
Bryan Robson hit his 23rd goal of the season and combined with Brooking to make openings that could have given MacDougall two more.
Mike Doyle pulled back a goal for City 8 minutes before the end.
Ex-Red Tony Whelan at no. 9.
