LAST-KICK FRANNY ROBS SAINTS

JACK STEGGLES WRITING IN THE DAILY MIRROR 7TH MARCH 1973
England striker Francis Lee, back after injury, became City’s hero at the Dell last night. Lee, who had earlier missed the best chance of the match saved City a point by scoring with the last kick of the game.
Most of the crowd were streaming away by this time, convinced that Brian O’Neill’s 44th minute goal had given Southampton victory.
Skipper Terry Paine set up the game’s first chance for Southampton. His cleverly chipped free kick found Mick Channon in space, but the England striker failed to make contact as he tried a shot on the turn,
City snapped back and Francis Burns rescued Southampton when a clever flick by Rodney Marsh sent Francis Lee racing in on goal.
City were playing the little football the game produced, but they lacked any real penetration and Southampton keeper Eric Martin was rarely troubled.
His counterpart Joe Corrigan had even less to do, for Southampton’s game was littered with errors.
Three minutes before half-time, Corrigan was called into action for the first time, going full length to hold a left foot volley from Bobby Stokes.
A minute before the interval Southampton went ahead as Channon prepared to shoot but Brian O’Neill pounced to slam it in.
